Schools can search students with less justification than police need. But the search must be reasonable: school officials need a reasonable suspicion of wrongdoing, and the search must match the severity of the suspected violation.

School officials may search students based on reasonable suspicion rather than probable cause, and the search must be reasonably related to the circumstances justifying it.
